I sure can...and i do often...it is my heaven....Let us delve into psalm 23 and explore all of its rich scriptures....
The Good Shepherd
A Davidic psalm.
1The Lord is my shepherd;
there is nothing I lack.
2He lets me lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside quiet waters.
3He renews my life;
He leads me along the right paths
for His name’s sake.
4Even when I go through the darkest valley,
I fear no danger,
for You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff A shepherd’s equipment — they comfort me.
5You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6Only goodness and faithful love will pursue me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
as long as I live.
Isn't that such a beautiful rich passage, let's break it down a bit....
The Lord is our shepherd, there is nothing I lack. What exactly does that mean?? Well a shepherd is responsible for taking care of his flock of sheep. Providing them with care, leading them to fresh water, feeding them and keeping them secure from predators. Shepherds took their job very seriously and cared for their flock as if they were their own children. Isn't that what our Father does for us? He protects us, cares for us as his children and loves us unconditionally. Just as a shepherd watches over its flock, so does our loving Father watch over his children. There is nothing we lack when we are in his care.
He lets me lie down in green pastures and leads me beside quiet waters. He renews my life; He leads me along the right paths for His name sake. When we are in God's presence He does not lead us astray, just as a shepherd is responsible for leading its flock, we are responsible for going forward on the path God has lead us on....He will not lead us astray.
Even when I go through the darkest valley, I fear no danger, for You are with me; your rod and Your staff- they comfort me. It is comforting to know that when we are in peril or difficult situations our Father is with us, protecting us and guiding us. We must completely rely on Gods presence and fear not. The rod and staff of a shepherd helped guide the flock and keep them from dangers and even ward off enemies. So as the shepherd's staff protects the flock, the metaphorical rod and staff of God guides us, protect us and ward off our enemies.
You prepare a table for me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. David could be referring to a large leather blanket ("table") the shepherds would lay fodder on when grass was too scares, the shepherds also treated the sheeps injuries with oil. Just as our Father treats our wounds. Our cup overflows with the abundance God has given us in our lives. We have more than enough with Him.
Only goodness and faithful love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord as long as I live. If we stay in the presence of the Lord we find security, love, peace and goodness. We hope for this security all the days of our lives.
Psalm 23 is beautiful and so meaningful to us as followers of Christ. Knowing that we are protected under the staff of God is enough to make our cup runneth over with love, joy, compassion and security!!
